Words and phrases

To get the hang of something  - to understand something or one is able to do something. Etwas zu verstehen oder etwas tun zu können.

Dave has decided to take up painting.  He fancies himself as an artist.  Claire is helping Dave.

I say, Claire, can you give me a hand, please?   I can't get the hang of  this picture I'm trying to paint.

What are you trying to paint, Dave?

I'm trying to paint a still life. A bunch of flowers.  I always imagined still lifes to be easy. But, bunches of flowers are not so easy to paint after all.

Let me see what you're doing, Dave.  OK, now I understand.  This picture isn't so difficult to paint. In the spaces where there is a number 4 you must paint red, in the spaces with a number 2 you must use blue, and so on and so on. Just keep on trying, Dave.  You'll soon get the hang of it.

Oh, this is easy Claire.  Now I know why you became an artist.  Painting great pictures is  very, very easy. Did you learn to paint by numbers at art school?  

No, Dave. I started painting by numbers when I was 5. 

And, you've been painting by numbers ever since?

No, Dave.  I stopped painting by numbers when I was 6.  

So, it didn't take you long to get the hang of painting great pictures.  You must feel like Picasso.  I wonder if Picasso started his career by painting with numbers as well.  

Everything's possible, Dave.

In any case, Claire, now I really understand why you decided to take up art.  You're an artistic genius.

And, you're a genius with cows and pigs, Dave.

I say, Claire, can you put the kettle on, please?  I'm dying for a cup of tea. 

Of course, Dave. But, I'm sorry.  I haven't any cherry cake.

No problem.  I'll get mum to give you  the recipe. The way to a man's heart is through his stomach.

Can I offer you a slice of ginger cake?

I'm not sure I'd like it, Claire. Mum's never made a ginger cake.

I'm not your mother, Dave!

Dave hat beschlossen, mit der Malerei zu beginnen.  Er hält sich selbst für einen Künstler.  Claire hilft Dave dabei.

Ich sage: Claire, kannst du mir bitte helfen?   Ich komme mit dem Bild, das ich zu malen versuche, nicht zurecht.

Was versuchst du zu malen, Dave?

Ich versuche, ein Stillleben zu malen. Einen Blumenstrauß.  Ich dachte immer, Stillleben wären einfach. Aber Blumensträuße sind dann doch nicht so einfach zu malen.

Lass mal sehen, was du da machst, Dave.  OK, jetzt verstehe ich.  Dieses Bild ist gar nicht so schwer zu malen. An den Stellen, an denen die Zahl 4 steht, musst du rot malen, an den Stellen mit der Zahl 2 musst du blau malen und so weiter und so fort. Versuche es einfach weiter, Dave.  Du wirst es bald in Griff bekommen.

Oh, das ist einfach, Claire.  Jetzt weiß ich, warum du Künstlerin geworden bist.  Tolle Bilder zu malen ist sehr, sehr einfach. Hast du auf der Kunstschule gelernt, nach Zahlen zu malen?  

Nein, Dave. Ich fing an, nach Zahlen zu malen, als ich 5 war. 

Und seitdem malst du immer nach Zahlen?

Nein, Dave.  Ich habe aufgehört, nach Zahlen zu malen, als ich 6 war.  

Es hat also nicht lange gedauert, bis du in Griff bekommen hast, große Bilder zu malen.  Du musst dich wie Picasso fühlen.  Ich frage mich, ob Picasso seine Karriere auch mit dem Malen nach Zahlen begann.  

Alles ist möglich, Dave.

Jedenfalls verstehe ich jetzt, warum du dich für die Kunst entschieden hast, Claire.  Du bist ein künstlerisches Genie.

Und du bist ein Genie im Umgang mit Kühen und Schweinen, Dave.

Claire, kannst du bitte den Kessel aufsetzen?  Ich brauche unbedingt eine Tasse Tee.

Ich bin mir nicht sicher, ob ich ihn mag, Claire. Mum hat noch nie einen Ingwerkuchen gemacht.

Vocabulary and Phrases

In for a penny, in for a pound - to finish the job. We have started so we might as well finish.  Auch - Mitgefangen, mitgehangen 

we might  as well - We use the phrase might as well to say we should do something because we have no reason not to do it.  Wer einen Penny gibt, gibt ein Pfund - um die Arbeit zu beenden. Wir haben angefangen, also können wir es auch zu Ende bringen.

Ken and Dave are having an afternoon break.  A nice cup of tea and a slice of cherry cake.  They're in the midle of a very hard job.  They're repairing the tractor. Dave is not very happy.

How much longer do you think this job is going to take us, dad?

It's hard to say, Dave. But, by my estimation, I'd say at least another one or two hours.  If we're lucky, we'll be finished by tea time.  If not, well, it's going to be a very long night.

That's bad, dad.  I promised to pick Claire up at seven.  We're going to the cinema. 

Well, Dave, you might have to postpone the cinema until another time.

Couldn't we call it a day  and carry on tomorrow, dad?  

That's out of the question, Dave.  We must have this tractor working again.  We need it first thing in the morning. We've an important job to get done. So, come on Dave, in for a penny, in for a pound.  Let's get going again. 

You're right, dad. In for a penny, in for a pound. And, I'm sure Claire won't mind not going to the flicks this evening.  As you said, dad, one can always postpone  the pictures.

That's my boy!  So we might as well get going.  And, who knows, Dave. We might be finished qicker than expected. 

That would be great dad. And, maybe, I won't have to cancel the pictures, after all!

Das ist schwer zu sagen, Dave. Aber ich schätze, dass es noch mindestens ein bis zwei Stunden dauern wird.  Wenn wir Glück haben, sind wir zur Tee zeit fertig.  Wenn nicht, dann wird es eine sehr lange Nacht werden.

Das ist schlecht, Dad.  Ich habe versprochen, Claire um sieben abzuholen.  Wir gehen ins Kino. 

Nun, Dave, vielleicht musst du das Kino auf ein anderes Mal verschieben.

Könnten wir nicht Schluss machen und morgen weitermachen, Papa?  

Das kommt nicht in Frage, Dave.  Wir müssen den Traktor wieder zum Laufen bringen.  Wir brauchen ihn gleich morgen früh. Wir haben einen wichtigen Job zu erledigen. Also, komm schon, Dave, wer wagt, gewinnt.  Lasst uns wieder loslegen. 

Du hast Recht, Dad. Mitgefangen, mitgehagen. Und ich bin sicher, dass es Claire nichts ausmacht, heute Abend nicht ins Kino zu gehen.  Wie du schon sagtest, Papa, man kann die Filme immer verschieben.

Das ist mein Junge!  Also können wir genauso gut loslegen.  Und, wer weiß, Dave. Vielleicht sind wir schneller fertig als erwartet. 

Das wäre toll, Dad. Und vielleicht muss ich die Bilder dann doch nicht absagen!

I bumped into my brother Andy. He had just come out of the florist's. He'd bought a bunch of flowers for Sarah. 

It's not Sarah's birthday until September. I'm sure he's done something stupid again. He probably has a bad conscious about something or other.  

Or, maybe he was just being nice?  

I don't think so, Dave.  Your uncle never buys flowers for Sarah.   But, you never know, maybe he's improved his ways.  We'll probably find out  tomorrow.  He's bringing Sarah over for elevenses in the morning.   Maybe, they have some interesting news. 

I'm curious, Ken.

Oh, and there's one thing more, Jean.  Andy hinted  something about staying  for lunch. 

Well, if they're staying for lunch, they'll  have to take pot luck.  I haven't even been shopping this week, and, I don't even know what I have.  I must look in the 'freezer. Maybe, I'll find something good.  But, I hope they're not expecting anything too exciting.  I've better things to do than cook for your brother and his wife.

Well, let's wait and see, Jean.  If the worst comes to the worst, we can always offer them fish-fingers.

That's a good idea, dad. Fish fingers and chips is one of my favourite meals!

Das glaube ich nicht, Dave.  Dein Onkel kauft nie Blumen für Sarah.   Aber man weiß ja nie, vielleicht hat er sich inzwischen gebessert.  Das werden wir wohl morgen herausfinden.  Er bringt Sarah morgen früh zum Elevenses mit.   Vielleicht haben sie interessante Neuigkeiten.

Ich bin neugierig, Ken.

Oh, und da ist noch etwas, Jean.  Andy hat erwähnt, dass sie zum Mittagessen bleiben wollen.

Nun, wenn sie zum Mittagessen bleiben, müssen sie Glück haben.  Ich war diese Woche noch nicht mal einkaufen und ich weiß nicht mal, was ich habe.  Ich muss in der Tiefkühltruhe nachsehen. Vielleicht finde ich ja etwas Gutes.  Aber ich hoffe, sie erwarten nichts allzu Aufregendes.  Ich habe Besseres zu tun, als für deinen Bruder und seine Frau zu kochen.

Jean has heard an interesting programme on the radio. Now, the Bartons are discussing it over breakfast.

I say Dave and Ken, I heard an interesting programme on the radio last night.  It was all about hobbies.  Apparently, interesting people have interesting hobbies, and boring people have boring hobbies.

What is an interesting hobby, Jean?

What do you think, Dave?

A good hobby is having an interest in something that interests you. Like stamp collecting or horse riding.

You're right, Dave. But, sometimes, interesting hobbies can be a disaster. One day, Uncle Andy  decided to take up motor racing as a new hobby. He bought himself a very fast car  which cost him a pretty penny, then, the rest, he believed, would be easy.  He entered one or two races  He believed he'd soon be  very rich with all the money he was going to win. But, then the penny dropped.  Andy hadn`t even thought about the extra costs involved in his new hobby.  He had bitten off more than he could chew. And, to cut a long story short, Andy sold his car and took up stamp collecting instead. 

That reminds me of my sister Jane. She decided to take up flower arranging. She thought she was going to win all the flower arranging prizes in England.  But, she had no idea of what she was doing. And, she soon gave up flower arranging.  

Has Claire got a hobby, Dave?

Claire's hobby is art photography.  She even won a prize in an an art photography competition.  She entered a photo of a black square on a black background.  It was the most amazing picture I've ever seen. Of course, most normal people don't understand high art. Claire's sister said that claire had a lose screw. But, Claire's sister hadn't the faintest idea of what she was ralking about.Claire's sister beleives that good art is a still life showing a bunch of bananas.

Guess what's for afternoon tea.

Cherry cake.

No, this afternoon, we're having scones with clotted cream and strawberry jam.  But, don't worry, I'm making a cherry cake tomorrow.

Jean hat im Radio eine interessante Sendung gehört. Jetzt diskutieren die Bartons beim Frühstück darüber.

Ich sage: Dave und Ken, ich habe gestern Abend eine interessante Sendung im Radio gehört.  Da ging es um Hobbys.  Anscheinend haben interessante Leute interessante Hobbys, und langweilige Leute haben langweilige Hobbys.

Was ist ein interessantes Hobby, Jean?

Was denkst du, Dave?

Ein gutes Hobby ist, wenn man sich für etwas interessiert, das einen interessiert. Zum Beispiel Briefmarken sammeln oder reiten.

Du hast Recht, Dave. Aber manchmal können interessante Hobbys eine Katastrophe sein. Eines Tages beschloss Onkel Andy, Autorennen als neues Hobby zu betreiben. Er kaufte sich ein sehr schnelles Auto, das ihn ein hübsches Sümmchen kostete, und der Rest, so glaubte er, würde einfach sein.  Er nahm an ein oder zwei Rennen teil und glaubte, dass er mit all dem Geld, das er gewinnen würde, bald sehr reich sein würde. Aber dann fiel der Groschen.  Andy hatte nicht einmal an die zusätzlichen Kosten gedacht, die mit seinem neuen Hobby verbunden waren.  Er hatte mehr abgebissen, als er kauen konnte. Und, um es kurz zu machen, Andy verkaufte sein Auto und begann stattdessen mit dem Briefmarkensammeln.

Das erinnert mich an meine Schwester Jane. Sie beschloss, Blumenbinderin zu werden. Sie dachte, sie würde alle Blumenbindepreise in England gewinnen.  Aber sie hatte keine Ahnung, was sie da tat. Und bald gab sie das Blumenbinden auf.

Hat Claire ein Hobby, Dave?

Claires Hobby ist die Kunstfotografie.  Sie hat sogar einen Preis bei einem Kunstfotowettbewerb gewonnen.  Sie hat ein Foto von einem schwarzen Quadrat auf einem schwarzen Hintergrund eingereicht.  Es war das erstaunlichste Bild, das ich je gesehen habe. Natürlich haben die meisten normalen Menschen keine Ahnung von hoher Kunst. Claires Schwester sagte, Claire hätte eine Schraube locker. Aber Claires Schwester hatte nicht die geringste Ahnung, wovon sie sprach. Claires Schwester glaubt, dass gute Kunst ein Stillleben ist, das einen Haufen Bananen zeigt.

Rate mal, was es zum Nachmittagsjause gibt.

Kirschkuchen.

Nein, heute Nachmittag gibt es Scones mit Clotted Cream und Erdbeermarmelade.  Aber keine Sorge, morgen backe ich einen Kirschkuchen.

Mum, du bist die beste Mum der Welt.
