And, now to our story .

It's seven in the morning.  Breakfast time.  The Bartond are enjoying a very good breakfast.  Dave is in a very good mood. He has some news.

I say, Dave.  You look very happy this morning.  Good news from Claire?

Well, actually mum and Dad, I haven't heard from Claire for more than a week, now.  I've tried phoning her, but she never answers my calls.

So, why are you so happy, Dave?

Well, just between us, mum and dad,  Jane and I are going out this evening.  Just for old time's sake of course.  Noting else.  Jane and I are only good friends.  But, I must say, I'm looking forward to having some fun again.

Well well well, this is a tun up for the books. Where are you going?

We're going for a walk by the river, and then we're going to the Queen's. Just like our first date.  But, please, mum and dad, keep it under your hat.  We don't want any gossip.  And, the villagers love gossiping.  Especially the women.

Well, Dave, as soon as you walk in the Queen's Head, everyone will know!  Putting 2 and 2 together won't be a difficult thing.

And, what about Claire, Dave?

Well, to be honest, mum and dad, Claire's going to Paris was  a blessing in disguse.  I was a bit sad at first, but now I'm totally happy.  As they say, mum and dad,  there are plenty more fish in the sea.You might get a little peckish down by the river!

Oh, one more thing, Dave.  Shall I give you some cherry cake to take with you?  You might get a little peckish down by the river!

Thanks, mum, but no thanks!

Questions -  Why was Dave happy?   Who is Dave taking out?   Is Dave  looing forward to seeing Mary again?  Where are Jane and Dave going?  Why are they going down to the river?  Are they going swimming?  Where are Jane and Dave going after their walk?  Will Jane and Dave manage to keep their date a secret?  Is Dave's mum good at keeping things uner her hat?   Why was Claire's going to Paris a blessing in disguise?   Explain the word disguise.  Can you keep a secret?
